The Black Stars’ 2024 unbeaten run came to an end on Tuesday in a 2-2 draw with Uganda in an international friendly played in Marrakech.
Ghana got off to a strong start when defender Jerome Opoku headed home a cross from Jordan Ayew to score the team’s first goal. Steven Mukwala of Uganda, however, equalised and negated Opoku’s goal.
After Denis Odoi was fouled in the box, Jordan Ayew calmly scored a penalty kick to give the Black Stars the lead again just before halftime. Ghana gave up a late goal despite their best attempts to win, forcing a stalemate. This implies that in 2024, the Black Stars will still have not won.
Ghana participated in six games in 2024, recording two losses and four draws, falling to Cape Verde and Nigeria, and drew with Egypt, Mozambique, Uganda, and Namibia prior to the unanticipated 2023 Africa Cup of Nations group stage exit.
In his second spell as head coach, Otto Addo would be unhappy with Ghana’s performance in the March friendly as they were unable to score a victory. The preparation for the 2026 World Cup qualifiers against Mali and the Central African Republic in June was greatly aided by these matches.
With two games played, the Black Stars have three points. To improve their chances of making it into the tournament, which the USA, Canada, and Mexico will co-host, they must win their next two games.
