251, 149 New Voters Have Been Registered
The Deputy Chairman of the Electoral Commission (EC), Dr. Bossman Asare, has revealed that within six days of the 21-day limited voter registration exercise nationwide, 251,149 new eligible voters have been registered. Dr. Asare stated that this translates to an average of 45,000 applicants per day. Among the registered applicants, females accounted for 135,898 (54.11%), while males were 115,251 (45.89%).
Breaking down the registration figures by region, Dr. Asare provided updates. In the Greater Accra Region, 33,899 applicants were registered (13.5%); in the North East Region, 6,928 (2.8%); and in the Upper East Region, 10,646 (4.2%). The Northern Region saw 19,491 applicants (7.8%); Bono, 8,972 (3.6%); Bono East, 9,681 (3.9%); Volta, 12,190 (4.9%); and Upper West, 8,474 (3.4%). Additionally, the Eastern Region had 25,625 applicants (10.2%); Central, 27,984 (11.1%); Ahafo, 6,273 (2.5%); Ashanti, 44,232 (17.6%); Western North, 9,134 (3.6%); Oti, 7,259 (2.9%); Savannah, 5,261 (2.1%); and Western, 15,100 (6.0%).

The majority of registered voters, numbering 221,066 (88.02% of the total), are aged between 18 and 21. Regarding persons with disabilities, 400 have been registered so far. Dr. Asare expressed concern about the dominance of the guarantor system in identification, which is prone to misuse. He noted that out of the forms of identification used, the Ghana Card was utilized by 98,926 applicants (39.39%), the passport by 622 (0.25%), and the guarantor system by 151,601 (60.36%).
Challenge cases during the first six days of the exercise were relatively evenly distributed across regions. The Greater Accra Region recorded the highest number of challenge cases at 524, while the North East had the lowest at nine. As a percentage of total registrations in each region, the Volta Region had the highest percentage of challenges at 4.29%, while the North East had the lowest at 0.13%. The national total of challenge cases stood at 2,935.
