Shocking Abuse: 36-Year-Old Teacher Gets 10 Years for Incest

Shocking Sentence: 36-Year-Old Teacher Gets 10 Years for Incest
Edward Ekuadzi

A 36-year-old pupil teacher, Edward Ekuadzi, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison with hard labour for committing incestuous acts with his 17-year-old daughter. The Denu Circuit Court handed down the verdict on May 2, 2025, after Ekuadzi pleaded guilty to the charge. This case highlights the severity of child abuse and the importance of protecting vulnerable individuals in society.

The case began when the victim’s mother, Madam Christy Kwau, a trader, reported to the Aflao Police Station that her daughter had been sexually assaulted by her father. The victim, a Senior High School student, had been living with her father since infancy after her parent’s divorce. She revealed that Ekuadzi had sexually assaulted her twice, first in March 2025 and again on April 17, 2025, in their living room. He had also threatened her, warning that she would face severe consequences if she disclosed the abuse.

Upon investigation, Ekuadzi admitted to having sexual intercourse with the victim on three occasions. A medical examination was conducted, and he was arrested on April 30, 2025. The court’s verdict serves as a reminder of the severity of the crime and the importance of protecting vulnerable individuals, particularly children, from abuse. According to Ghana’s Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29), incest is a serious offence.

Section 105 defines incest as a male aged 16 or above having sexual intercourse with a female he knows to be his granddaughter, daughter, sister, mother, grandmother, or wife’s daughter (if under his care). The punishment for incest is a mandatory prison sentence of not less than 3 years and not more than 25 years. Since the victim was 17 years old, Ekuadzi’s actions fell under this category.

In cases where the victim is under 16, the offender may face additional charges of defilement under Section 101, which carries a minimum 7-year and maximum life imprisonment. The court’s decision to sentence Ekuadzi to 10 years in prison with hard labour reflects the seriousness of the crime and the need to hold perpetrators accountable for their actions.

The case emphasizes the need for increased awareness and education on preventing child abuse and promoting a safe environment for children to grow and thrive. It also draws attention to the importance of supporting survivors of abuse and providing them with the necessary resources to heal and rebuild their lives.

The sentencing of Edward Ekuadzi serves as a significant step towards justice for the victim and her family. It also sends a strong message to potential perpetrators that such abominable crimes will not be tolerated. As the community continues to grapple with the consequences of child abuse, cases like this show the importance of vigilance and action in protecting the most vulnerable members of society.

The court’s verdict in the case of Edward Ekuadzi is a reminder of the importance of upholding the law and protecting children from abuse. It is a step towards ensuring that justice is served and those who commit such crimes are held accountable for their actions.
