50 Ghanaians Face U.S. Deportation by Mid-Year
50 Ghanaians to Be Deported from the U.S. by Mid-Year – Foreign Affairs Minister Confirms

Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, announced that 50 Ghanaians who are currently in detention in the United States have received final deportation orders. The affected individuals are among 150 Ghanaian nationals in U.S. detention centers, and their deportation is anticipated to occur by mid-2025. Ablakwa gave updates from Ghana’s diplomatic mission in Washington on March 13, 2025, outlining the types of cases that lead to deportation, stating that those in detention are charged with rape, internet fraud, and illegal entry into the United States.
Of the 150 people in custody, 50 have been ordered to return to Ghana, while 100 cases have been dismissed or are still under appeal. On March 19, March 28, and April 1, 2025, three people who have previously been processed for deportation are scheduled to board commercial aircraft.
The Minister added that after diplomatic efforts by the Ghanaian Embassy in the United States, one Ghanaian detainee was released on health grounds. The Ghanaian Embassy has also conducted interviews with ten Ghanaians to confirm their nationality and that they were given due process prior to deportation.
The Ghanaian government is closely monitoring the situation and engaging with U.S. authorities to ensure fair treatment for affected citizens. The issue of deportation remains a key concern, as the government seeks to provide support and reintegration plans for those returning home.
