A two-year-old boy bitten by a dog in Accra has undergone a successful operation at the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital.

Dr. Hope Glover Addy, a Pediatric Surgeon, explained that the surgery involved reconstructing the anus and affected area, with the stool redirected to the abdomen to facilitate normal passage.

The two-year-old boy was attacked by a mixed shepherd breed dog on Monday night, resulting in severe damage to his anus, surrounding flesh, and genital area. The mother had momentarily left him in a playpen to use the restroom when the incident occurred.

Dr. Addy noted that while the initial surgery was successful, the toddler’s chances of survival hinge on the outcome of the pending final surgery. He elaborated, stating, “The boy sustained injuries where part of the anus and surrounding skin were severed, necessitating the diversion of stool from the anus to the abdomen.”The pediatric surgeon emphasized that the injuries were severe, necessitating intensive treatment and imposing a significant financial burden on the parents.
