Accra Launches Bold CBD Cleanup to Restore Order & Pride
Accra Metropolitan Assembly Launches Major Decongestion Operation in CBD to Restore Order and Sanitation

The Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) and the Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly formally started a massive decongestion effort in Accra’s Central Business District (CBD) on Tuesday, May 20, 2025. This project is a component of a larger drive by local officials to restore order and sanitation in the city. High-traffic locations close to the AMA Head Office will be the focus of the operation’s first phase.
Target areas include the region between Opera Square and Adabraka, the stretch between Kinbu Road and the Railways area, and the ECG Junction and the King Tackie Tawiah Statue. Areas close to well-known attractions like the Mövenpick Hotel and Accra City Hotel will receive extra attention.
AMA Public Relations Officer Gilbert Ankrah stated in an interview with Citi News on Monday, May 19, that the decongestion work will be stepped up in major roads such as Cow Lane, Wato Junction, and the King Tackie Tawiah School zone. In order to maintain safety, hygienic conditions, and unrestricted mobility in the city center, the exercise attempts to clear pedestrian walkways and remove unlicensed vendors.
Michael Kpakpo Allotey, the chief executive of AMA, had direct conversations with hawkers and street sellers in the central business district prior to the operation. He urged them to work together at the conference, highlighting their common objective of building a tidy, well-run, and prosperous Accra.
“I urge all vendors and traders to support this exercise. Let’s work together to make Accra a city we can all be proud of. Staying off pedestrian walkways is essential if we want a more functional urban space,” he stated. He further reassured traders of future opportunities, highlighting plans under the upcoming 24-hour economy policy, which will allow them to operate during night hours and reduce congestion during the day.
The decongestion drive is expected to be a continuous effort, gradually extending to other parts of the city as part of AMA’s long-term vision to modernize Accra and enhance public order.
