Afenyo-Markin Opens Up About His Wealth and Political Journey

Effutu’s Member of Parliament (MP) and Minority Leader in Ghana’s Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has shared details about his business endeavors and financial achievements before to entering politics. He discussed his professional development, entrepreneurial path, and the difficulties of his political leadership in an exclusive interview on JoyNews’ The Probe on Sunday, February 2.
Afenyo-Markin revealed that he got his first employment with Ghana Post in the late 1990s, marking the start of his professional career. He began his career as a postboy and worked his way up to the position of principal post officer. He recalls having to spend two years at home after graduating from school in 1997 before relocating to Accra and landing a job at Ghana Post.
Afenyo-Markin was in his third year of college when he made the audacious decision to drop out in 1999, even though he had been awarded a scholarship to attend Cape Coast University. He stated that his primary motivation for leaving was his wish to pursue business opportunities.
His choice soon paid off, as his business sense resulted in the founding of multiple profitable businesses. The establishment of Excel Courier, a business that evolved to be a multimillion-dollar enterprise, was one of his significant commercial achievements. Early in his business career, he was able to buy expensive vehicles like a Mercedes and a BMW because to his financial success. Additionally, he obtained substantial financial support from big institutions, such as a $10 million credit from Barclays Bank and a $5 million facility from Standard Chartered Bank.
Afenyo-Markin vehemently refuted claims that he purchased state lands or utilized proxies to amass riches in the face of public examination of his holdings. He explained that he had obtained his holdings, including Winneba property, legally.
“I am not one of those who buy property and register it in someone else’s name. My land in Winneba is not state-owned, and the reports suggesting otherwise are misleading,” he asserted.
Afenyo-Markin also addressed questions about his reluctance to accept government positions despite his party’s rise to power. He revealed that in 2017, he declined an appointment from his regional minister due to his commitment to his business ventures. Similarly, in 2021, he turned down an offer from Kennedy Agyapong to take on a ministerial role, stating that he would only consider such positions later in life when he has fully settled in his career.

Afenyo-Markin acknowledged that assuming the position of Minority Leader in Parliament has presented a number of difficulties. He underlined that unilateral decision-making is challenging since the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is structured to require extensive consultation.
“Well, it’s been challenging,” he admitted. “In the NPP, everyone is considered an equal. You need to consult widely before making decisions.”
Despite the demands of his leadership position, Afenyo-Markin conveyed his appreciation to those who provide him with both constructive criticism and praise..
“I want to thank those who continuously provide feedback—those who commend me when I do well and critique me when I go wrong. Their guidance helps shape me as a leader,” he noted.
Acknowledging the demands of his position, he stated that effective leadership requires resilience and wisdom.
“To be in this position is not easy. You need strength, wisdom, and guidance to do the job well. I continue to pray for wisdom and direction,” he concluded.
