During a campaign tour in the Ahafo Region, President Nana Akufo-Addo critiqued former President John Dramani Mahama, emphasizing that Mahama’s one-term presidency does not make him superior to Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the presidential candidate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the upcoming 2024 election.

Akufo-Addo’s remarks came after Mahama declined a proposal to participate in a policy debate with Bawumia, arguing that, as a former president, it would be inappropriate for him to debate a sitting vice president. Mahama maintained he would only consider debating a presidential peer.

In response, Akufo-Addo argued that Mahama’s political “class” is questionable, as he is the only one-term president in Ghana’s history since the Fourth Republic. According to Akufo-Addo, Mahama’s failure to secure a second term in the 2016 election reflected the public’s dissatisfaction with his leadership, disqualifying him from any claim of superiority over Bawumia.

Akufo-Addo further highlighted Bawumia’s qualifications and integrity, asserting that these attributes made him well-suited to lead Ghana forward. He noted that Bawumia’s tenure as vice president has demonstrated his dedication, vision, and competence, qualities he believes Mahama did not fully deliver during his term. For Akufo-Addo, the focus should not be on “empty titles” or past status but rather on a candidate’s proven ability to serve Ghana effectively.

The president continued by calling for the public’s support of Bawumia, underscoring his potential to advance Ghana and stating that the nation deserves committed leadership. He framed Bawumia as a capable leader ready to take on the challenges Mahama, according to Akufo-Addo, did not address adequately.

Through this critique, Akufo-Addo positioned Bawumia as a forward-looking choice for Ghana, one rooted in practical work and commitment rather than political hierarchy or former titles.
