President Akufo-Addo to Inaugurate Flower Pot Interchange on November 19
LATEST NEWS: President Akufo-Addo Set to Inaugurate Accra’s Flower Pot Interchange on November 19 for Improved Traffic Flow

Ghana’s President Nana Addo is set to officially open the Flower Pot interchange on Tuesday, November 19, 2024. The announcement was made by Eugene Arhin, the Director of Communications at Jubilee House, on Sunday, detailing the scope and impact of the long-awaited project.
The newly developed interchange includes several key upgrades to improve traffic flow and connectivity. The project features a redesigned Flower Pot roundabout, a newly constructed road through the old East Legon tunnel, an additional 200-meter road extending from the Giffard Road Interchange toward Cantonments, and pedestrian walkways alongside the flyover.
It also includes essential road furniture like streetlights, road markings, and traffic signals to ensure safety and functionality. Launched on March 7, 2017, the interchange was constructed by China Railway No. 5 Engineering Gh. Ltd, with consulting services provided by Deoke Consult Ltd. The project took 93 months to complete and received funding support from Afrexim Bank in partnership with the Government of Ghana.
Once commissioned, the Flower Pot interchange is expected to significantly ease congestion and improve connectivity between the northern and southern parts of the motorway. Key areas such as Cantonments, Burma Camp, East Legon, Spintex, and Tema will benefit from smoother traffic flow, enhancing the quality of life for residents and improving accessibility across the region.

The interchange includes an 802-meter dual carriageway viaduct with asphalt concrete surfacing, a 140-meter ramp linking Shiashie to Airport Hills, and an 80-meter ramp connecting the viaduct directly to the motorway heading towards Tema. This infrastructure upgrade is anticipated to play a crucial role in supporting the city’s growing population and improving road safety and travel times.
