Akufo-Addo Vows Strict Enforcement Against Law-Breaking Politicians in 2024 Election
As Ghana approaches the pivotal December 2024 elections, President Nana Akufo-Addo has issued a stern warning to political parties and presidential candidates: any breaches of the law will not go unpunished. Speaking at the inauguration of The Law House in Accra on Monday, June 10, Akufo-Addo made it clear that his administration will enforce legal standards rigorously to maintain peace and order during the election period.
In his address, President Akufo-Addo underscored the importance of upholding the rule of law to safeguard the nation’s stability and security. “We will not permit any political entity to disrupt the peace and stability that Ghana is known for,” he asserted. “The ambitions of any political party or presidential candidate will not come at the expense of our nation’s order.”5
The President emphasized that law enforcement agencies, including the office of the Attorney General, are fully prepared to ensure that all parties adhere to legal norms. He reassured the public that the government would do everything within its power to preserve law and order throughout this crucial election year.
The commissioning of The Law House marks a significant milestone in Ghana’s judicial landscape. The ten-storey building, adjacent to the High Court complex, will serve as the new headquarters for the Attorney General and Ministry of Justice. The project, which began in 2001 and saw a resurgence in January 2023, now boasts state-of-the-art facilities, including conference rooms, 130 office spaces, 120 parking lots, and a dining area.
At the ceremony, Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame announced plans to upgrade the infrastructure of regional offices to enhance their functionality and move away from makeshift operations. “It’s time we provide state Attorneys with the proper facilities they need to perform their duties effectively,” he declared.
Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo, also present at the event, highlighted the need for continued investment in legal education reforms and other projects to improve the justice system.
She acknowledged the importance of modernizing court facilities but stressed the equal necessity of advancing the broader judicial framework.
As The Law House opens its doors, it symbolizes a commitment to justice and governance that the President insists will extend through the election season and beyond. The message is clear: in 2024, no one is above the law.
