Alan Kwadwo Kyerematen, the Leader of the Movement for Change and an independent presidential aspirant for the 2024 elections, has announced plans to enhance family leave policies if elected. He aims to extend maternity leave to six months and introduce a 12-week paternity leave.

Kyerematen, who served as the Minister of Trade and Industry from 2003 to January 6, 2009, and from 2017 until the end of 2022, resigned from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in September 2023 after placing third in the party’s presidential primary. Subsequently, he formed the Movement for Change and announced his independent candidacy for the 2024 presidential election.

In his policy statement on social media, Kyerematen emphasized his commitment to improving the Labour Amendment Bill. He plans to extend paid maternity leave to 24 weeks and provide an option for an additional 12 weeks of unpaid maternity leave. This proposal aligns with the ILO Maternity Protection Convention 1952, which currently ensures 12 weeks of paid maternity leave funded by employers in Ghana.

Kyerematen believes that his transformative plan will enhance the overall quality of life and reduce socioeconomic disparities across the country.

On June 24, 2024, he launched his “Great Transformational Plan (GTP)” in Accra, which he described as a blueprint for Ghana’s economic transformation. The GTP outlines robust policy prescriptions and practical steps towards building an enterprise economy in Ghana.

The plan aims to create a prosperous, united, and peaceful Ghana that provides equal opportunities for all, particularly young people, women, and vulnerable groups, to realize their full potential and improve their livelihoods and general well-being. Kyerematen’s proposals on family leave policies are part of his broader vision for social and economic reforms designed to uplift the nation.
