Austria has opened a new embassy in Accra, marking a significant step in enhancing diplomatic and economic relations with Ghana. The embassy, located in Osu, aims to foster stronger diplomatic engagement and cultural connections between the two countries.
During the opening ceremony, Austria’s Federal Minister for European and International Affairs, Mr. Jackson Alexander Schallenberg, highlighted the importance of Ghana-Austria relations, calling Ghana a “beacon of stability, possibility, and optimism.”
Mr. Schallenberg emphasized the mutually beneficial nature of the partnership, expressing Austria’s commitment to deepening ties through economic, trade, and people-to-people cooperation. He underscored that Ghana and Austria share common values, including the rule of law, democracy, and international law, and stressed that Austrian businesses operate without hidden political motives.
Ghana’s Foreign Minister, Madam Shirley Ayorkor Botchwey, also spoke at the event, celebrating the long-standing relationship between the two nations, which dates back to the 1960s. She highlighted the potential for expanded cooperation in key areas such as trade, particularly with Ghana’s strategic position within the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA). Madam Botchwey expressed optimism that the economic partnership would create job opportunities for Ghanaians.
As part of the visit, two Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) were signed, covering cooperation in areas like development, migration, and labor market access. Additional agreements in health, education, and natural resources are expected to be signed during a business forum, further strengthening the ties between the two nations.
