CAF Revokes Approval for Baba Yara Stadium Over Technical Infractions

The National Sports Authority (NSA) has announced that the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi is ready to resume hosting football activities following the completion of renovation works. Patience Adams, the Ashanti Regional Public Relations Officer of the NSA, confirmed this development during an interview with Akoma FM. She noted that while the stadium is fully operational and prepared to host matches, formal approval is still needed from higher authorities in Accra before it can officially reopen.

“All work at the Baba Yara Stadium is completed and ready to host any football events, but we are awaiting clearance from our superiors in Accra before the facility can be opened,” Adams explained.

Confederation of African Football (CAF) deemed it unfit for international matches

The stadium had been closed after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) deemed it unfit for international matches, primarily due to the poor state of the pitch. This led to the relocation of key events, including Ghana’s 2025 AFCON qualifiers against Sudan, which were moved to Accra. Additionally, Asante Kotoko SC had to host their home games in Obuasi during the renovation period.

Now that the necessary upgrades have been made, the sports community in Kumasi and beyond is eagerly awaiting the official reopening of the stadium. The renewed Baba Yara Stadium is expected to be a hub for both local and international football events, boosting Kumasi’s profile as a key destination for major sports fixtures. The announcement has sparked anticipation, as fans and teams alike look forward to returning to the iconic venue.
