Parliament Denies Bagbin-Akufo-Addo Settlement Talks Over Vacant Seats

The Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has dismissed allegations that he met with President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to negotiate a settlement regarding the recent declaration of four parliamentary seats as vacant. These claims surfaced after Bagbin’s controversial ruling on October 17, where he declared the seats for Fomena, Amenfi Central, Suhum, and Agona West vacant. This decision has since been put on hold by the Supreme Court pending further deliberations.

In response to the circulating rumors, Parliament issued a statement on October 22, clarifying that a video being shared on social media, purportedly showing Speaker Bagbin in a recent meeting with the President, is misleading. According to the statement, the video in question was actually recorded during the presentation of the maiden Democracy Cup to the President, not during any discussions related to the current parliamentary disputes.

The Speaker’s office emphasized that there have been no negotiations between Bagbin and Akufo-Addo concerning the vacant parliamentary seats. The statement urged the public to stop spreading false information and to disregard the misleading video.

Parliament firmly refuted the claims, stating, “There is no iota of truth in the insinuation in the circulated video.” The video, which was taken on July 4, 2024, during the Democracy Cup presentation, has been wrongly labeled to suggest involvement in ongoing political issues. Parliament called the attempt to twist the facts and tarnish the integrity of the Speaker and the institution “disingenuous and unfortunate.”

The statement further advised the public to dismiss the misleading narrative and treat it with the contempt it deserves. Parliament reiterated that no such settlement talks have occurred, and any claims suggesting otherwise should not be trusted.
