Bawku Conflict: One More Fatality Raises Death Toll to 26 Amid Rising Tensions

A fresh outbreak of violence in Bawku has led to the death of one more individual, pushing the total death toll to 26 since the renewed conflict emerged in late October 2024. Despite strict curfews in place from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m., gunmen continue to violate the restrictions, resulting in escalating attacks that have heightened concerns and fear among residents.
The recent wave of violence has severely impacted daily life, forcing the closure of schools and disrupting businesses as locals brace for potential conflict.
In the most recent incident on Tuesday, November 12, violent clashes in Bawku’s Daduri neighborhood left two individuals dead and several others injured. The altercations involved gunfire exchanges, culminating in the burning of two homes, which has intensified the area’s ongoing security crisis.
Amid the rising unrest, there has been a noticeable exodus of residents fleeing Bawku in search of safety. Six buses, escorted by military personnel, were seen transporting people to Bolgatanga, where they hope to find refuge.
This resurgence of violence reportedly began after the return of Alhaji Seidu Abagre, a rival chief who had previously been in exile. His return, combined with recent ambushes on travelers in the area, has further fueled tensions, making the situation increasingly precarious.
As the security situation continues to deteriorate, authorities face the challenge of restoring peace and stability to the troubled region.
