Bawumia Declares Free Kidney Dialysis for All NHIS Patients Starting December 1

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has unveiled initiative that will provide free kidney dialysis treatment for all patients enrolled in Ghana’s National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), effective December 1, 2024. This major healthcare policy follows a successful pilot program that began earlier this year.
Speaking during his campaign visit to the Old Tafo constituency on Sunday, November 10, Dr. Bawumia highlighted the financial burdens kidney patients face due to the high cost of dialysis treatments. He explained that the pilot program, introduced six months ago, initially provided free dialysis services for patients over 60 and children under 18, covering vulnerable age groups most affected by the expense.
“Kidney disease affects many people, and dialysis is often essential yet very costly, making it inaccessible to numerous patients,” Dr. Bawumia stated. “In response, we implemented a pilot program to extend NHIS benefits to cover dialysis for patients over 60 and those under 18. Now, we are wrapping up the pilot phase, and from December 1, we will extend this coverage to all kidney dialysis patients under NHIS, making these life-saving treatments free for all,” he continued.
This expansion of NHIS dialysis coverage aims to ease the financial strain on families impacted by kidney disease, enhancing the accessibility of essential health services across Ghana. Dr. Bawumia’s announcement has sparked widespread support, as it addresses a pressing healthcare issue and marks a significant step towards more comprehensive and equitable health coverage for all Ghanaians.
