Bawumia Launches ‘Tap and Go’ and Ticketing Solution for Metro Mass Transit

Ghana’s push for digitalization now extends to its public transport sector with the introduction of Tap and Go, a digital service launched by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia in Accra on February 19.

This innovative platform offers a variety of features, including a digital card for fare payments and a mobile app for virtual cards. Dr. Bawumia highlighted the systemic challenges facing the sector and emphasized Tap and Go’s role in improving efficiency, transparency, and combating corruption.

The initiative aims to address issues such as delays, revenue under-declaration, and difficulties in fare payment and change. By providing a unified payment solution for various transport services, Tap and Go seeks to streamline commuting across Ghana, including intra and inter-city buses, taxis, and parcel delivery.

Speaking in detail about the initiative, Dr. Bawumia said, “The Tap and Go project, seeks to build a single system and common platform for the entire transport ecosystem of Ghana; for intra and inter-city bus services, trotro, loading taxi service and the call on demand uber-like service.”

“The solution, is to provide a single transport card for all commuting payments in Ghana, hence the Tap and Go system, which was developed by local talents here in Ghana.”

Dr. Bawumia added that the new Tap and Go digital system, unlike the Ayalolo card, which was only limited to the intra-city Ayalolo bus, is expansive and tailored to support other public transport services including parcel delivery and tracking, taxi hailing, intercity city bus services, inner cities bus services such as Metro Mass and Ayalolo.

“Soon we are looking forward to bringing on board the GPRTU trotro services which will be integrated seamlessly,” he noted.

Dr. Bawumia expressed optimism that this digital platform will enhance transparency, reduce waiting times, and optimize operational costs, ultimately ensuring safer and more accessible journeys for all passengers. He called upon stakeholders to embrace this opportunity and collaborate towards a digitally empowered transportation future.
