Bawumia to Mahama: ‘You’ve been President before, let me have my turn.’ Follow the latest in Ghana’s political discourse.

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has requested that former President John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), step aside to allow him a chance to serve as president, noting that Mahama has already held the position.

Bawumia pointed out that he could potentially serve two terms, unlike Mahama, who is limited to one more term.

Speaking during a meeting with Wa Naa Fuseini Seidu Pelpuo IV at his palace in Wa on Sunday, May 19, Dr. Bawumia remarked, “Both myself and my main opponent, John Dramani Mahama, are from the North. He has already been president, but I have not. I have told him, as my senior brother, to be patient and allow me the opportunity to become president.”

He added, “I can serve as president for eight years, while he can only serve for four more years. Therefore, if the presidency is returning to the North, it should be for eight years rather than just four.”
