POLITICAL NEWS: High Court Dismisses Bernard Mornah’s Challenge to Election Disqualification
The High Court has dismissed a legal challenge filed by Bernard Mornah, flagbearer of the People’s National Convention (PNC), contesting his recent disqualification from the upcoming presidential election by the Electoral Commission (EC). The ruling, delivered on Monday, October 21, 2024, dealt a significant blow to Mornah’s hopes of reversing the decision and cleared the path for the EC to move forward with the election preparations without his candidacy.
Mornah’s disqualification, along with several other aspirants, has raised concerns within the political landscape, particularly as the December elections draw near. His application sought to overturn the EC’s decision, which cited irregularities in his nomination forms as the main reason for his exclusion from the race. These irregularities have triggered debates about the electoral process’s transparency and fairness.
Mornah was not the only candidate to face disqualification. Several prominent political figures were also removed from the race, including Kofi Asamoah-Siaw of the Progressive People’s Party (PPP) and Janet Nabla of the People’s National Party (PNP). Independent candidates Nana Stephens Adjepong and Paul Perkoh, along with Samuel Apea-Danquah, Desmond Abrefah, Dr. Samuel Sampong Ankrah, and Nii Amu Darko, were also disqualified due to issues with their nomination paperwork.
The EC’s decision to disqualify these candidates has sparked concern across various political groups, as it limits voter options and presents additional challenges for smaller parties like the PNC. With Mornah’s legal efforts now blocked, his party will face significant obstacles in gaining momentum for the upcoming elections. The disqualifications have heightened scrutiny over the electoral process and raised questions about its overall integrity.
