Beyoncé’s latest album “Act II: Cowboy Carter” has achieved historic milestones by topping both the Top Country Albums and Billboard 200 charts, making her the first Black woman to do so in the country genre. This success follows her debut single “Texas Hold ‘Em” claiming the top spot on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart in February. Despite debates about her status as a country artist, Beyoncé’s album, with its blend of pop, country, R&B, zydeco, and other genres, solidifies her connection to country music.

Beyoncé’s upbringing in Houston, Texas, a city with a rich country music heritage, and her family’s roots in the American South, particularly Alabama and Louisiana, add depth to her connection with country music. Her song “Formation” references her Southern background, with lyrics mentioning her father’s Alabama origins and her mother’s Louisiana roots. This familial connection to the South underscores Beyoncé’s cultural ties to country music, despite any arguments about her pedigree in the genre.

In comparison, Keith Urban, an Australian native, has also achieved immense success in country music. His recent performance at the 2024 CMT Music Awards highlights his prominence within the genre. Urban’s numerous accolades, including nine CMT Music Awards and multiple Country Music Association awards and Grammys, further solidify his status as one of country music’s biggest stars.

Despite coming from different backgrounds, both Beyoncé and Keith Urban have made significant contributions to the country music scene, demonstrating that talent transcends geographical boundaries. Despite Beyoncé’s assertion that her latest project is not a country album, the charts seem to disagree.
