Bole Chief Imam Bans Lavish Weddings to Ease Financial Strain

Alhaji Mohammed Iddrisu, the Chief Imam of the Bole Traditional Area in the Savannah Region, has formally outlawed lavish wedding festivities in the community in an effort to uphold Islamic principles and lessen the financial burden on young couples.

The goal of the rule, which went into force on March 5, 2025, is to reduce the excessive spending on wedding ceremonies that has been on the rise recently. The prohibition focuses on things like couples changing their clothes several times, lavish receptions, and entertainment activities like planned dance performances. Furthermore, it forbids male beauticians from dressing female brides, which is deemed improper by Islamic law.

Alhaji Iddrisu stressed that extensive consultations with Islamic experts and community leaders led to the decision. He pointed out that young Muslim men and women find it challenging to carry out their marital responsibilities because of the needless financial strain that the rising popularity of lavish wedding rituals has imposed on families.

The Chief Imam intends to uphold Islamic teachings of simplicity by implementing the ban, which will keep marriage affordable and accessible. Along with the general population, he has urged religious and traditional authorities to endorse and enforce the new rule.

In Ghana, lavish weddings are becoming more and more common among the country’s Muslim community, especially in the north. Many young people find marriage unaffordable because of these ceremonies’ frequent high-profile guests, fashionable attire, and lavish celebrations.

Islamic traditions support modest, cost-effective weddings, guaranteeing that everyone, regardless of financial situation, can participate in the institution of marriage without experiencing excessive hardship.

Discussions among multiple parties have been triggered by the Bole Chief Imam’s decision, which many believe is an essential intervention to restore the core of Islamic marriage customs and lessen social pressure on couples.
