Former Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources Cecilia Abena Dapaah revealed in a high-profile court case in Accra that she had accumulated $95,000 worth of stolen jewelry over 35 years. She disclosed this information during her testimony at the High Court, where seven people—including her former housekeepers—are accused of stealing money and valuables from her home.

Dapaah claims that $210,000 that belonging to her late brother, Nana Akwasi Essan II, commonly known as Charles Dapaah, was taken by the accused. She clarified that this amount was a portion of a larger $800,000 that her older brother, Henry Osei Kwabena, had given her to keep safe per their mother’s directives after Nana Essan II’s death.

The theft extends beyond this amount, as other significant sums were also allegedly stolen from Dapaah’s home. These include:

  • $200,000 belonging to Dorcas Wiredua, a relative and client of her husband.
  • £300,000, which belonged to her husband.
  • ₵300,000 in contributions meant for the final funeral rites of her late mother.
  • ₵50,000 from her personal savings.

The seven accused—Patience Botwe, Sarah Agyei (both former housekeepers), Benjamin Sowah, Christiana Achab, Job Pomary, Malik Dauda, and Yahaya Sumaila—are charged with conspiracy, theft, receiving stolen property dishonestly, and money laundering, among other offenses. All of the defendants have been released on bond after entering not guilty pleas.

This case, which raises issues with security, wealth preservation methods, and court cases involving well-known Ghanaian figures, continues to get a lot of public and media attention.
