South African Beauty Queen Chidimma Adetshina Wins Miss Universe Nigeria

Chidimma Adetshina, a 23-year-old law student, was crowned Miss Universe Nigeria on Saturday, marking a triumphant turn in her journey after being forced to withdraw from the Miss South Africa pageant due to a controversy surrounding her nationality. The beauty queen, whose father is Nigerian and mother is Mozambican, faced intense scrutiny when critics questioned her eligibility to compete in Miss South Africa, despite being born in Soweto and raised in Cape Town.

The row escalated when the organizers of Miss South Africa requested an investigation by the Department of Home Affairs into her citizenship. The department later suggested that Adetshina’s mother might have committed “identity theft” to acquire South African citizenship, but cleared Adetshina of any involvement due to her young age at the time. In response to the media storm and concerns for her family’s safety, Adetshina made the difficult decision to drop out of the contest.

Her story garnered international attention, and the organizers of Miss Universe Nigeria invited her to compete in their pageant, offering her the opportunity to represent her father’s homeland. Adetshina accepted and went on to win the title, earning the right to represent Nigeria at the Miss Universe competition in November.

While Adetshina’s victory has been celebrated by many on social media, praising her resilience and calling her a symbol of African unity, it has also sparked controversy. Some critics alleged that the contest was “rigged” in her favor, pointing out that she had not lived in Nigeria for 20 years and had only arrived a week before the pageant. However, Miss Universe Nigeria organizers have not responded to these allegations.

Adetshina will now join Mia le Roux, the first deaf woman to win Miss South Africa, in representing their respective countries at the Miss Universe competition later this year.
