Nigerian beauty queen Chidimma Adetshina has captured global attention by securing the second spot in the world’s Miss Universe pre-arrival hot picks. The viral poll, released on November 5, highlights Adetshina’s strong standing ahead of the 73rd Miss Universe pageant, set to take place on November 16, 2024, in Mexico.

Adetshina, a 23-year-old law student, arrived in Mexico in October 2024 to begin preparations for the competition. Her high ranking has thrilled Nigerians, who are optimistic about her chances of winning the crown. However, Adetshina’s journey to the Miss Universe stage has been marked by controversy and challenges surrounding her nationality.

Born in Soweto, South Africa, Adetshina has faced a turbulent nationality dispute after competing as a finalist in the Miss South Africa pageant. Her South African identity was questioned due to her father’s Nigerian origin and her mother’s Mozambican roots. The South African Department of Home Affairs launched an investigation into her mother’s citizenship status, with officials alleging possible “identity theft” in acquiring South African nationality.

Amid mounting scrutiny and backlash, Adetshina withdrew from the Miss South Africa competition in August. Following her withdrawal, Home Affairs officials announced that her South African identification documents would be canceled, a decision that sparked xenophobic reactions within South Africa. Both Adetshina and her mother now face the potential revocation of their citizenship documents, and the case has been referred to the Hawks, a specialized unit for serious crimes, on allegations of fraud.

Despite the controversy, Adetshina went on to compete in and win the Miss Universe Nigeria title, affirming her pride in both her South African and Nigerian heritage. In interviews, she has expressed resilience, noting that the backlash has been emotionally challenging, and she feels the need for therapy to recover from the ordeal.

Now, as she prepares to compete against contestants from around the world, including South Africa’s Miss Universe representative, Mia le Roux, Adetshina stands determined to represent Nigeria. Her journey underscores the challenges of identity in global representation, and she remains steadfast in showcasing her heritage on the Miss Universe stage.
