As part of its efforts to reduce the backlog of cases, the Judicial Service is establishing a shift system that will permit certain courts to session in the evenings.

The Chief Justice, Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo, unveiled a novel idea known as the court shift system (CSS) that will enable the chosen courts to function in two sessions: morning and afternoon, with the morning session running from 8:30 am to 1pm and the afternoon session from 1:30 pm to 6:30 pm.

It is anticipated that the CSS will launch on March 25 of this year.

The circuit court in Weija, the district court in La, the district court in Teshie, the two district courts in Adentan, the Amasaman High Court 1, the two District.

Rationale

The Judicial Secretary, Justice Cyra Pamela Addo, signed a circular to all courts on March 14, this year, stating that the CSS, which is now being used as a trial programme, is intended for courts with more than 600 open cases.

The circular explained that the goal was to decrease the backlog of cases so that individuals would have better access to justice.

The circular states that the courts’ current resources will be optimised in order to deploy the CSS.

Backlog of cases

The Chief Justice alluded to the CSS’s pilot program’s execution in a media conference held following the December opening of a new circuit court in Atebubu, in the Bono East Region.

Judge Torkornoo praised the government for building over 100 new courts, claiming that this would significantly improve the availability of justice.

She did point out that certain courts were overflowing with up to 1,000 cases, while others had a smaller backlog.

According to her, these courts were under a great deal of pressure, which made it challenging for them to handle cases quickly.
