The Ghana Health Service (GHS) has reported a total of 56 cholera cases following an outbreak in the Kasoa enclave, where initial reports indicated only five cases. Currently, 46 patients are hospitalized and receiving treatment, while the death toll remains unchanged at five, as confirmed last week.

Among the recorded cases, 15 are residents of Kasoa, while the remaining cases have originated from neighboring districts, including Gomoa East and Ga South. Dr. Patrick Kumah Aboagye, Director-General of the GHS, conducted a visit to the affected area on Monday to meet with stakeholders and discuss the ongoing response to the outbreak. During this visit, he outlined a comprehensive plan aimed at ensuring effective treatment for those affected and preventing further spread, particularly from health facilities.

Dr. Aboagye also noted improvements in the Ada area, where the outbreak first began, indicating that the measures taken are beginning to have a positive effect. He emphasized the importance of vigilance among all regional health departments, urging them to implement preventive measures against the spread of cholera.

To the general public, he issued a strong reminder about the necessity of maintaining high standards of hygiene and sanitation. “Let’s ensure that we keep a sanitary environment around us. We should wash our hands regularly, just as we did during the COVID-19 pandemic,” he advised. Dr. Aboagye stressed the need for schools to provide adequate Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene (WASH) facilities, ensuring access to running water and soap for handwashing. He urged workplaces and marketplaces to also take necessary actions to create a clean and safe environment to help prevent the transmission of cholera.

By adhering to these guidelines, communities can reduce the risk of further infections and protect public health during this challenging period.
