Born Emily Drinkard, Cissy Houston was a renowned singer in the soul and gospel genres. She enjoyed a successful career as a backup vocalist for music legends such as Elvis Presley, Aretha Franklin, and Dionne Warwick, and was also a member of the popular group The Sweet Inspirations.
In addition to being Whitney Houston’s mother, Cissy was the aunt of singers Dionne Warwick and Dee Dee Warwick, and a cousin of celebrated opera singer Leontyne Price. As a prolific session singer, she recorded hundreds of songs across various genres, contributing her vocals to tracks by artists ranging from Jimi Hendrix to Beyoncé.
Cissy Houston also had a notable solo career in gospel music, earning Grammy Awards for her albums “Face to Face” and “He Leadeth Me” in the late 1990s.
