A statewide strike has been called by the Civil and Local Government Staff Association, Ghana (CLOGSAG) in protest of Samuel Adom Botchway’s appointment as the Registrar of the Births and Deaths Registry.

Following a resolution made by CLOGSAG’s National Executive Council (NEC) during a meeting on February 11, 2025, the strike is scheduled to start on Thursday, February 20, 2025. The hiring of politically exposed people for important roles in the Civil and Local Government Services raised serious concerns for the council.

CLOGSAG Executive Secretary Isaac Bampoe Addo said in a news release on February 13, 2025, that the union had resolutely decided to conduct industrial action in the event that Mr. Botchway took power. The statement stressed that “the National Executive Council has decided that CLOGSAG will declare a nationwide strike should Mr. Samuel Adom Botchway take up the role of Registrar.”

On Wednesday, February 12, 2025, Mr. Botchway took official office in spite of CLOGSAG’s objections. As a result, CLOGSAG has called for all of its members nationwide to remain at home starting on February 20, 2025, until further notice.

Concerns about possible interruptions to civil sector activities are rising, and the Ghanaian administration has not yet responded formally to the strike declaration.

The government and public sector labor unions are at odds over the politicization of important administrative appointments, and this strike exacerbates those tensions. As events develop, many Ghanaians are keeping a close eye on things and waiting for more information from CLOGSAG and government representatives.
