The Concerned Drivers Association of Ghana has publicly endorsed key transport policies proposed by John Dramani Mahama, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) flagbearer, ahead of the 2024 elections.
The group expressed strong support for Mahama’s initiatives aimed at improving the lives of commercial drivers.
Amenu Yusuf, the National Secretary of the Association, highlighted several of Mahama’s proposals that have garnered the group’s backing. These include offering high-purchase vehicles, introducing a pension scheme for drivers, establishing ultramodern bus terminals nationwide, and instituting a “Driver’s Day” to celebrate drivers. Yusuf elaborated that these policies resonate deeply with the drivers’ needs and would significantly alleviate their current economic pressures.
He specifically pointed out that the high-purchase vehicle policy would make vehicle acquisition much more accessible for drivers, who often struggle to afford even used cars. Yusuf explained, “It is almost impossible for drivers to purchase third-hand vehicles, let alone new ones. This policy could ease the distress we face in meeting sales demands.”
The Association also issued a caution to Mahama, urging him to remain committed to these policies and emphasizing their readiness to support his candidacy if he follows through. “Amidst our despair based on the current economic condition in the country, the NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama has mentioned some policies offering a gleaming hope,” Yusuf added.
These endorsements come as part of a broader conversation about improving conditions for Ghana’s transport sector workers, and the Concerned Drivers Association’s support underscores the potential impact of Mahama’s transport policy proposals on the upcoming elections.
