Data Prices Likely to Reduce by End of 2024 – NCA
The National Communication Authority (NCA) has announced that data prices are expected to decrease by the last quarter of 2024. This comes in response to public concerns over high data costs and subpar service quality.
The announcement follows widespread criticism and calls for the dissolution of the NCA board, partly due to MTN’s classification as a Significant Market Power (SMP). Critics argue that this classification has contributed to unreliable data supply and elevated costs.
However, the NCA clarified that the SMP designation is intended to foster fair competition rather than to hinder MTN’s operations. In a statement, the NCA explained that measures such as unbalanced interconnection rates, tariff parity, and technology neutrality are designed to promote competition, innovation, and consumer protection. The aim is to create a more competitive market that benefits consumers.
During an interview on Citi FM’s Eyewitness News with Umaru Sanda Amadu, Dr. Joe Anokye, the Director General of the NCA, expressed optimism about the anticipated reduction in data prices.

He highlighted the introduction of the NGIC wholesale carrier-neutral open access network as a key factor in driving down costs. This new network, set to launch by the last quarter of the year, will allow operators like AT, Telecel, and MTN to purchase bulk data without the need for upgrading towers or equipment, thereby increasing efficiency and reducing expenses.
Dr. Anokye stated, “Data prices are expected to go down, especially with the introduction of the NGIC wholesale carrier-neutral open access. Operators like AT, Telecel, and even MTN will be able to buy bulk data without needing to upgrade their towers or purchase new equipment to provide 4G services. Another entity will handle that.”
He further emphasized the positive impact of this development, saying, “They are supposed to launch by the last quarter of the year, and from there, we will begin adding more towers. I think we should be hopeful.”
The NCA’s efforts are aimed at addressing consumer concerns and enhancing the overall quality and affordability of data services in Ghana.
