Doctors at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) have resigned due to issues with accommodations, leaving patients trapped while they await treatment.

The physicians argue that some of them are not in the correct state of mind to work since they are constantly threatened with eviction.

In order to make room for redevelopment, the doctors are being forced from their official residence at Danyame. The doctors contended that while they support redevelopment, what they really need is appropriate relocation plans.

They have stated that they will not return to work unless the accommodation problem is fixed.

Many of the patients in the hospital’s main Out-Patient-Department (OPD) were clearly irr“I came all the way from Sefwi Wiawso in the Western North Region to seek medical care, but unfortunately I have to return home without being attended to because doctors are on strike. This is really frustrating”, Ishmael Owusu lamented.

Just like Ishmael, several other persons had to return home disappointed.

“I have an appointment with the doctor today, but I’ve been here for the past 3 hours without being attended to. The nurses came to tell us doctors are not working today. So I’m waiting for a new date before I go home. If this is not resolved soon, some of us might end up dying”, 62-year old Agnes Antwi said

Nonetheless, hospital administrators have stepped in to make sure the physicians handle urgent patients.

Later that day, a meeting to discuss the matter is planned, with officials from Management, the doctors organisation, the Lands Commission, and the Regional Coordinating Council expected to attend.
