ECG Dismisses Need for ‘Dumsor’ Timetable
The Deputy Managing Director of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Ing. Kwadwo Obeng, has dismissed the need for a load-shedding timetable despite the recent announcement of a three-week power outage due to a gas supply shortage from Nigeria.
This decision comes after business owners, particularly barbers and tailors, urged the ECG to provide a timetable to help them plan their activities during the outages. In interviews with Citi News, some small business operators voiced their concerns, explaining that the lack of power disrupts their ability to work and earn a living. One barber highlighted the dilemma, stating that without electricity, he is unable to operate his business and therefore cannot generate income to meet his needs.

However, at a public forum addressing challenges in the power sector, Ing. Obeng explained that a load-shedding schedule would be unreliable due to the unpredictable nature of faults and maintenance requirements.
He emphasized the complexity of the situation, noting that accurate scheduling is difficult without knowing the exact amount of power that needs to be reduced or the duration of the outages. Additionally, variations in power demand during off-peak and peak periods further complicate the creation of a precise timetable.
Obeng also mentioned ongoing collaborations with local manufacturers and companies with power plants in Ghana, aiming to bring more certainty and stability to the power supply during this challenging period.
