POLITICAL NEWS :Election 2024: Overview of the 24 Presidential Candidates

On Monday, September 9, 2024, the Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) headquarters was a hive of activity as it commenced the nomination process for the upcoming 2024 presidential election. Out of the 39 aspirants who collected nomination forms, 24 candidates successfully completed their nominations before the deadline on Friday, September 13, 2024.

This diverse group of nominees includes both political party representatives and independent candidates, with a notable inclusion of three female candidates.

Among the independent contenders are Alan John Kwadwo Kyerematen, Samuel Apea-Danquah, George Twum Barima Adu, Nana Kwame Bediako, widely known as Cheddar, and Desmond Abrefah. Other independent candidates include Nana Stephens Adjepong, Paul Perkoh, James Kwesi Oppong, John Enyonam Kwakwu Kpikpi, Dr. Samuel Sampong Ankrah, Nii Amu Darko, and Kofi Koranteng.

From the political parties, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was the first to submit his nomination, accompanied by party officials. The National Democratic Congress (NDC) also submitted their flagbearer John Dramani Mahama’s nomination on the same day.

Other political party candidates who filed their nominations include Dr. Hassan Ayariga from the All People’s Congress, Bernard Mornah of the People’s National Convention, Kofi Akpaloo from the Liberal Party of Ghana, and Dr. Daniel Augustus Lartey Jnr of the Great Consolidated People’s Party. Additionally, Rev. Christian Kwabena Andrews of the Ghana Union Movement, Kofi Asamoah Siaw of the Progressive People’s Party, and Mohammed Frimpong from the National Democratic Party also submitted their nominations.

The three female candidates in the race are Akua Donkor of the Ghana Freedom Party, Janet Nabla from the People’s National Party, and Nana Frimpomaa Sarpong Kumankumah.

The successful completion of these nominations is a key development as the 2024 presidential election approaches. The EC has assured the public of a thorough review of all submitted nomination forms.
