Family of Slain Manchester United Fan Seeks Justice as Loved One is Laid to Rest
Benjamin Ndyamuhaki – Laid to Rest

The body of 36-year-old Benjamin Ndyamuhaki, a passionate Manchester United supporter who was reportedly killed by an Arsenal fan, was laid to rest on October 30 in his hometown of Kabungo Cell, Katenga Parish, Kaharo Sub County in Kabale District, Western Uganda. Ndyamuhaki’s friends and family, deeply affected by his tragic death, gathered to honor him with heartfelt tributes. He was remembered as a dedicated, loving family member, being the fifth child in a family of eleven. His elder brother, Kenneth Atukwase, described him as “loving, hardworking, and supportive,” expressing the family’s grief and heartbreak over his sudden passing.

Another mourner, Barnard Tumuhimbise, appealed to the family to remain calm and resist the urge for revenge. He assured them that justice will prevail, emphasizing, “Our son did nothing wrong. Let us leave revenge to God.” Ndyamuhaki’s character was further praised by Dan Kasaku, the Chairperson of the Rukiga Taxi Drivers Association, who spoke of his humility, honesty, and cooperative spirit, describing his loss as a tremendous blow to the community.

Rev. Michael Asiimwe, Parish Priest at Rwesasi Church, addressed the congregation, advising sports fans to manage their emotions during games to avoid conflict. Citing his own love for football, he shared that he avoids video halls to keep his emotions in check. “If you struggle with anger, it’s better to find ways to manage it instead of resorting to violence,” he suggested.

Ndyamuhaki’s death reportedly stemmed from an altercation on October 27 at Kyobugombe Trading Centre. The incident began when Ndyamuhaki, celebrating a late Liverpool equalizer in a 2-2 Premier League draw with Arsenal, threw popcorn in excitement. This led to an argument with Arsenal supporter Onan Byampangi, who allegedly struck Ndyamuhaki with a stick. Following the assault, Ndyamuhaki was taken to Bukinda Health Centre and later transferred to Rugarama Hospital, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.

The Kaharo Sub County LCIII Chairperson, Edmond Tumwesigye, informed mourners that authorities are actively searching for Byampangi, who is believed to have fled to Ntungamo. Bonny Tumuranze, the Alliance for National Transition (ANT) party’s Kigezi regional coordinator, assured the community of ongoing police efforts to apprehend the suspect and urged against mob justice.

Kabale District Police Commander Joseph Bakaleke confirmed the ongoing manhunt for Byampangi, as the community and Ndyamuhaki’s family continue to seek justice.
