In the heart of the Shai Osudoku district, specifically in Asutsuare, a renowned rice production center, over 1,000 bags of locally produced rice are languishing in farms and warehouses.

This dire situation underscores a critical issue plaguing the region’s agriculture: the absence of a viable market and inadequate infrastructure, which have collectively contributed to a significant economic setback for local farmers.

Joseph Armstrong Gold-Alorgbey’s investigation reveals that rice harvested more than a year ago remains unsold and is now decaying in milling centers due to a combination of factors including a lack of buyers and deplorable road conditions. These infrastructural challenges make it exceedingly difficult for farmers to transport their produce to potential markets, exacerbating their plight.

Asutsuare’s extensive rice farms and milling factories are well-known for producing high-quality rice grains, often considered among the best in the country. Despite substantial investments by farmers to meet the demands of each planting season, they are confronted with a severe dearth of buyers. This predicament is particularly disheartening for farmers like Paul Kwame Asante, a 41-year-old teacher and veteran farmer with a decade of experience in rice cultivation.

“There are no buyers coming forward,” Paul laments, attributing the problem to poor road infrastructure and stiff competition from cheaper imported rice. His experience is echoed by many other farmers who find themselves in a similar predicament, waiting in vain for buyers a year after their harvest.

Enoch, another rice farmer in the region, highlights an additional challenge: the inadequate power supply in rice milling factories. This lack of reliable electricity has hindered the installation and operation of modern rice milling machines, which are essential for enhancing production efficiency and output. The existing power supply falls short of the required voltage needed for these machines, thereby stalling efforts to modernize rice processing in the area.

The initial surge in demand for local rice had given these farmers hope, leading many to significantly increase their production during the last crop season. However, the enthusiasm was short-lived as logistical hurdles and market accessibility issues became apparent. The poor state of the roads not only hampers the daily lives of the residents but also discourages potential buyers from venturing into the community.

The broader implications of this situation are far-reaching. The abandonment of such a large quantity of rice represents not just a financial loss for the farmers but also a waste of valuable resources and labor. Moreover, the inability to sell their produce means that farmers are deprived of the income needed to sustain their operations and support their families.

To address these challenges, a multi-faceted approach is necessary. Improving the road infrastructure would facilitate better market access, allowing farmers to transport their goods more efficiently. Additionally, enhancing the power supply to meet the needs of modern milling equipment could significantly boost production capacity and quality, making locally produced rice more competitive against imports.

There is also a need for government and private sector intervention to create sustainable markets for local rice. By promoting local produce and providing incentives for businesses to purchase from domestic farmers, the cycle of poverty and waste can be broken. As the situation in Asutsuare demonstrates, without concerted efforts to address these systemic issues, the future of local rice farming remains precarious.
