HEALTH NEWS: FDA Issues Warning Against Unapproved Postinor 2 with Pink Flower Label
The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has announced that a specific version of Postinor 2, identified by its pink flower label, is not registered and therefore not approved for use in Ghana. During a recent event in Bolgatanga, Mr. Abel Ndego, the Principal Regulatory Officer of the Upper East Regional Office, emphasized the importance of understanding that while Postinor 2 is commonly used as an emergency contraceptive, this particular product lacks FDA registration.
Mr. Ndego explained that without FDA approval, the safety and efficacy of this version cannot be guaranteed. He noted that the FDA’s quality monitoring efforts revealed that the Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient (API) required for pregnancy prevention was not present in the necessary amounts. As a result, individuals using this product may not achieve the desired contraceptive effect.
The warning came during the Regional launch of the Goodlife Health Fair, which aimed to promote health awareness and behavior change among the public. Mr. Ndego urged consumers to purchase medications only from licensed pharmacies and authorized outlets to ensure they receive registered and properly stored products. He highlighted that improper storage can significantly affect a medication’s efficacy, citing examples of syrup medications for children that are often stored incorrectly on kitchen shelves instead of in refrigerators.
At the event, FDA officials displayed various unregulated pharmaceutical products to raise awareness about the dangers associated with using such items. Mr. Ndego also criticized the marketing of products with misleading claims and inappropriate packaging, cautioning that these can pose serious health risks to consumers.
