Three countries have been formally disqualified by FIFA from competing in the 2026 World Cup for various reasons. Because of sanctions, Russia, Congo, and Pakistan are not allowed to compete in the international tournament that will be held in the US, Mexico, and Canada. As a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the Russian Football Union (RFU) is still prohibited from participating in any FIFA or UEFA tournaments. Russian national teams, both men’s and women’s, will not participate in the World Cup or European Championships after FIFA and UEFA upheld the decision in spite of appeals. Furthermore, Russian club teams are not allowed to compete in UEFA competitions.

FIFA has also imposed an immediate suspension on the Congolese Football Association (FECOFOOT) for what it refers to as “serious undue interference by third parties.” The nation was disqualified from World Cup qualifying as a result of this breach of FIFA’s rules. Regaining complete control of its headquarters, prohibiting unauthorized changes to financial signatures, and making sure that its operations are free from outside pressures are among of the requirements that FECOFOOT must fulfill in order to recover its status. The failure to establish a revised constitution that ensures free and fair elections has resulted in the suspension of the Pakistan Football Federation (PFF). FIFA has stated that the suspension would not be lifted until the proposed constitutional revisions have been approved by the PFF Congress.

The United States, Mexico, and Canada will co-host the next World Cup, which will be the first time the competition is held in three countries. Eleven stadiums in the United States will host games, compared to three in Mexico and two in Canada. Argentina won the 2022 tournament in Qatar, and they are still the current champions.
