Fire Outbreak at Kumasi Market Results in the Destruction of Approximately 200 Stalls

A fire outbreak at the Kumasi Race Course Market in the Ashanti Region has devastated close to 200 stalls and properties worth millions of cedis. The fire reportedly ignited on the morning of March 11 and, as of noon, the Ghana Fire Service had yet to extinguish it. The cause of the fire remains unknown, but thankfully, there were no casualties reported.

Affected traders shared their distress with JoyNews, highlighting the significant financial losses incurred. One onion seller recounted restocking 25 bags of goods the previous day, only to discover everything destroyed by the fire the next morning. Another trader, who sold grinding machines and pepper, lamented the intensity of the blaze, which prevented them from salvaging any goods.

“I sell grinding machines and pepper. All have been destroyed. Around 3 o’clock, I was told that there was a fire outbreak. When we got to the market, we could not take any of our goods due to the intensity of the fire,” she lamented.

In a concerning turn of events, police have arrested five individuals for allegedly attacking fire trucks due to their delayed arrival at the scene.
