Fired: Tamale Hospital CEO Ousted for Shocking Negligence
Tamale Teaching Hospital CEO Dismissed Over Alleged Mismanagement and Medical Negligence

Dr. Atik Adam, the CEO of the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), was fired by President John Mahama, causing a significant upheaval in Ghana’s healthcare administration. The ruling comes after a case of suspected medical malpractice that resulted in a patient’s untimely death and concerning claims of poor management. The dismissal happened soon after Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, the Minister of Health, visited the hospital on April 22, 2025, for an unscheduled inspection. The flagship referral hospital serves Northern Ghana and parts of the Sahel, and the minister voiced serious concerns about the terrible circumstances there. He noticed dirty facilities, malfunctioning equipment, and a general drop in service delivery standards while on the tour.
Patients are apparently forced to seek costly alternatives at private clinics since some of the hospital’s essential diagnostic equipment, including as an MRI machine and CT scanner, have reportedly been out of commission for more than six years. Akandoh called the state of affairs “disgraceful and unacceptable,” stressing the urgency of taking corrective action.
Public indignation following the death of a patient, Bavug Salim, who was allegedly left unattended in the emergency ward’s red zone for hours, also served as the impetus for the visit. Tamale and social media saw a surge in criticism following this incident, demanding responsibility. A three-person inquiry team has been assigned to look into Salim’s death and the hospital’s management shortcomings. Within two weeks, the committee is supposed to submit its findings.
Dr. Atik Adam, meantime, acknowledged the hospital’s difficulties but asserted that measures were already being taken to resolve them. He affirmed that an internal investigation into the alleged negligence had also been started. The minister emphasized that despite the unfavorable circumstances, medical staff must continue to be kind and professional. In order to stop more mistakes, stakeholders should also take a more active interest in the hospital’s activities.
