Former Second Lady Matilda Amissah-Arthur Survives Robbery and Strangulation Attempt
Matilda Amissah-Arthur, the former Second Lady of Ghana and widow of the late Vice President Paa Kwesi Amissah-Arthur, has shared a chilling account of a robbery that nearly claimed her life on December 5, 2023.
The intruder, clad in black, infiltrated her home, demanding money and threatening to kill her and anyone who intervened.
Mrs. Amissah-Arthur recounted the terrifying experience, explaining that despite complying with the robber’s demands and handing over $2,200 and 50 euros, the assailant was unsatisfied. He proceeded to ransack her bedroom, searching for additional valuables.
In a video testimony, she described the ordeal: “I initially thought I was dreaming. I rubbed my face to ensure I was awake, and there he was, standing over me, threatening to kill me and anyone who might come to help. He demanded money, and I quickly gave him all the cash I had, including the $2,200 my siblings had given me for house renovations and 50 euros of my own. But he was furious, calling it ‘small money,’ and began tearing my room apart.”
The situation grew more dire as the attacker became increasingly violent. “He dragged me from my bed and began hitting my head on the floor. After a brief phone call, he told me, ‘My boss says I should shoot you, but I’ll strangle you instead, so you’ll die a slow death.’ He then began to strangle me,” she recalled.

In a bizarre turn of events, Mrs. Amissah-Arthur asked for water amid the assault. Surprisingly, the assailant momentarily stopped, fetched water from her fridge, and allowed her to drink. However, his brief act of apparent mercy quickly turned back to cruelty as he resumed strangling her immediately after she took a sip.
This horrifying experience has left the former Second Lady shaken but grateful to be alive. She urges authorities to intensify efforts in ensuring security and preventing such violent crimes in the future.
