The reopening date for single-track Senior High Schools (SHSs) has been formally adjusted by the Ghana Education Service (GES). The reopening date has been rescheduled from March 29, 2025 to April 23, 2025.

An formal circular dated March 27, 2025, outlining this change was sent to all regional education directors. On behalf of the Acting Director-General of GES, Prince C. Agyeman-Duah, Director of the Schools and Instructions Division, signed the directive, which directed regional directors to make sure that all pertinent parties, such as parents, guardians, and students, are aware of the move.

The Eid-Ul-Fitr holiday, which falls on March 30, caused the initial reopening date of March 29, 2025, to be postponed. The Ghanaian government proclaimed Monday, March 31, and Tuesday, April 1, 2025, as public holidays by an Executive Instrument (E.I.) because the holiday falls on a Sunday. As a result, the reopening date was originally pushed to April 1; however, other factors resulted in an extend to April 23.

According to a Ministry of the Interior announcement, the decision to extend the holiday is in accordance with the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act (Act 601). By preventing students from having to travel back and forth during Easter break and public holidays, this action lowers the possibility of travel hazards.

GES’s Head of Public Relations, Cassandra Twum-Ampofo, clarified that reopening schools right before several vacations would interfere with academic operations and put students’ safety at danger. In particular, for final-year students preparing for the 2025 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE), she assured the public that steps are being taken to make up for the missed instructional time. To guarantee that students complete the required curriculum, extra teaching hours will be added to the academic calendar.

Only single-track SHSs are affected by this move; double-track students will continue to follow their original academic schedule.

To guarantee a seamless return to school, parents, students, and other educational stakeholders are urged to pay attention to the revised reopening date and take the required steps.
