GES Unveils 2024/2025 Academic Calendar for Basic and Senior High Schools

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has officially released the academic calendar for the 2024/2025 school year, covering both Basic and Senior High Schools. The announcement, which came via a statement signed by Prince C. Agyemang-Duah, Acting Director of the Schools and Instruction Division, was dated October 17, 2024. According to the statement, the new academic year for Senior High Schools is set to commence on Wednesday, October 30, 2024.

In addition, GES specified that the current academic year for first-year students attending single-track and transitional schools will conclude on Monday, October 28, 2024. The incoming school year will then begin on October 30 for these new first-year students, as well as for all continuing students enrolled in single-track schools.

The decision to adjust the calendar stems from GES’s goal to align the start of the 2025/2026 academic year with September. This adjustment is designed to ensure that final-year students have sufficient time to prepare for and sit their West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in the traditional May/June period. This synchronization is critical to enhancing the academic preparation and success of students, especially those in their final year.

The GES has issued directives to all Regional Directors to ensure that the updated academic calendar is promptly communicated to the Heads of Schools. This is to facilitate the smooth and effective implementation of the new timetable, ensuring schools across the country are in line with the changes.

This move reflects GES’s ongoing efforts to maintain academic stability and provide students with a structured timeline that maximizes their chances of success in upcoming exams.
