GES Unveils Standardised National Prospectus for Incoming Senior High and Technical School Students

The Ghana Education Service (GES) has introduced a harmonised prospectus, termed the “National Prospectus,” for all first-year students entering senior high and technical schools nationwide. This standardised document outlines the necessary items students need, ensuring that no school imposes additional requirements beyond what has been officially approved.
This new prospectus allows parents to begin preparing for their children’s admission without waiting for the release of the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS). The prospectus is divided into three categories, making it easier for parents to shop for their children’s essentials.
Details of the Prospectus
Category ‘A’ covers 27 essential items, which include hard-body suitcases or trunks, chop boxes or plastic containers, toiletries, beddings, school-specific footwear, underwear, cutlery, and educational materials like a mathematical set and scientific calculator.
Category ‘B’ deals with cleaning materials and is divided into three groups. Group one students will need hand gloves, 5 litres of liquid soap, and one kilogram of washing powder. Group two students must bring small-sized bleach, a dustpan, a long-handle broom, and a scrubbing brush. Meanwhile, group three students will be required to buy a standing mop and bucket, a duster, and a short broom.
Day students also have specified requirements under Category ‘A,’ including a mathematical set, scientific calculator, school-specific sandals, black or white sneakers, and a school bag. The cleaning materials for day students will follow the same groupings as those for boarding students.
Purpose of the Grouping
Dr. Eric Nkansah, Director-General of the GES, explained that the cleaning materials were grouped into three sets to prevent each student from being required to buy an excessively long list. He advised parents to purchase all essential items in Category ‘A’ while awaiting the assignment of their children’s cleaning material groups.
Dr. Nkansah reassured parents that the placement process would be smooth, emphasizing that every qualified student would be admitted since there are adequate vacancies. He also noted that the harmonised prospectus was introduced to eliminate unnecessary items that schools previously included, which often delayed enrolment.
Heads of Schools and Compliance
Dr. Nkansah reminded school heads that the harmonised prospectus takes precedence over individual school-specific lists and urged them to comply fully. He also warned that any attempts to charge for school placements would be met with strict legal action, as the admission process is free.
