Ghana Declares April 18 and 21 as Public Holidays for Easter Celebrations: Citizens to Enjoy Extended Weekend

In order to commemorate Easter, Ghana’s Ministry of the Interior has formally declared Friday, April 18, and Monday, April 21, 2025, as statutory public holidays. This ruling gives Ghanaians a longer holiday weekend, enabling social celebrations and introspection around the country. In line with the Christian calendar, Good Friday and Easter Monday are officially recognized as national holidays in Ghana, according to a statement released by Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak. All Ghanaians are urged to observe the Easter season with dignity and in compliance with national laws and traditional customs, according to the notice, which was made public on Monday, April 14.

One of the most important Christian holidays, Easter has developed into a big national celebration in Ghana that combines religious devotion with cultural festivities. The crucifixion of Jesus Christ is commemorated on Good Friday, April 18 this year, with solemn church services, fasting, and group prayers. It is anticipated that churches nationwide would host special services to consider the day’s spiritual significance. Easter Monday, which falls on April 21, usually has a more joyous vibe, with many families and church organizations planning picnics, outings, and leisure pursuits. Because so many people visit their hometowns or use the long weekend to unwind and rekindle relationships with loved ones, it is also a popular period for domestic travel.

The Ministry emphasized the importance of peace, safety, and mutual respect during the holiday period. It also noted that security agencies will increase their presence across major highways, towns, and public spaces to ensure a peaceful and safe Easter celebration for all.

In recent years, Easter in Ghana has grown beyond religious observance into a vibrant cultural occasion, bringing together people from diverse backgrounds through music, food, and shared traditions.
