Ghana Freedom Party set to announce new presidential candidate

The Ghana Freedom Party (GFP) is preparing to unveil its presidential and vice-presidential candidates for the upcoming 2024 general elections within the next 24 hours. This announcement comes in the wake of the passing of the party’s founder and initial presidential candidate, Akua Donkor. Following her death, the Electoral Commission of Ghana imposed a 10-day deadline for the GFP to nominate a suitable replacement for the presidential race.

In a recent interview with Citi News, Patrick Tetteh, the party’s parliamentary candidate for the Nsawam-Adoagyiri constituency, revealed that the GFP is convening a critical executive meeting on Monday, November 4. This meeting is aimed at finalizing preparations for the formal announcement anticipated on Tuesday. Tetteh stated, “Within the next 24 hours, GFP is coming out again with a press conference. The GFP is coming out to announce the presidential candidate and the vice-presidential candidate who is contesting for the 2024 election.” He emphasized that the party is actively working to present its candidates to the public.

Amidst the preparations, the GFP has expressed that it finds suggestions for the party to withdraw from the election due to Donkor’s passing to be disrespectful. Tetteh asserted that the most fitting tribute to Akua Donkor’s legacy is to continue her work and compete in the elections. He remarked, “If anybody is talking about somebody who independently founded a political party, who is number three in the 2024 general election, and you are telling me that if you want to honor such a person… you want her to withdraw out of this election. It doesn’t speak well to me.”

He further expressed that the notion of withdrawing from the electoral process feels inappropriate and disrespectful to the principles that Donkor stood for, emphasizing that her legacy should be honored through participation in the elections rather than withdrawal. Tetteh’s comments reflect the party’s commitment to moving forward in honor of its founder’s vision and contributions to Ghana’s political landscape.
