Ghana Gets $13M Japan Grant to Boost Tamale Electricity

Ghana has been successful in obtaining a grant from the Japanese government worth 1.92 billion Japanese yen, or almost $13 million. Tamale is a large city in the Northern Region, and the cash is intended to stabilize and enhance the electrical supply there.

On March 10, 2025, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, made the news in an official Facebook post. He discussed the agreement’s specifics in his remarks, highlighting the grant’s beneficial effects on the area’s energy infrastructure.

“This morning, I signed an Exchange of Notes with His Excellency Yoshimoto Hiroshi, the Japanese Ambassador to Ghana, to unlock a grant of 1.92 billion Japanese Yen (US$13 million) for the Stabilization of Electricity Supply in Tamale City,” Mr. Ablakwa stated.

Tamale has been struggling with frequent power outages, therefore the program aims to modernize and improve the power supply’s dependability. Given the city’s expanding population and rising electricity demand, the project is anticipated to be essential to maintaining business operations and raising citizens’ standards of living.

The award is a component of Ghana and Japan’s larger relationship, which aims to improve bilateral cooperation in a number of areas, such as infrastructure development, health, and energy. Mr. Ablakwa thanked Japan for its ongoing assistance and reiterated Ghana’s resolve to strengthen its commercial and diplomatic relations with the Asian country.

“This project and many others under discussion highlight the outstanding bond of friendship between Ghana and Japan,” he added.

Stakeholders expect the investment to result in major improvements to the city’s electrical grid, which will benefit businesses, households, and critical service providers in the area, though specifics of the project’s timeline and execution have not yet been revealed.
