Ghana Launches 5G Internet Service to Transform Connectivity and Boost Economy

Today, Ghana has officially launched its 5G internet service in Accra, marking a significant step in the country’s digital transformation. Led by the technology firm NextGen Infraco, a consortium that includes the Ghanaian government and seven other partners, the new 5G network aims to drive innovation, economic growth, and digital inclusivity across the nation. This consortium comprises Ascend Digital, K-NET, Radisys, Nokia, Tech Mahindra, and telecom companies AT Ghana and Telecel Ghana, all collaborating to bring the high-speed network to life.
During the launch event, Tenu Awoonor, Managing Director of NextGen Infraco, underscored the immense potential of 5G to empower various sectors of Ghana’s economy and enhance the quality of life for citizens. He expressed the company’s commitment to ensuring that the country’s substantial investment in 5G yields economic and social value. Awoonor emphasized the broad benefits of the network, explaining that 5G will offer unprecedented access to high-speed internet for all Ghanaians, from rural farmers in Tamale to entrepreneurs in Kumasi and students in Cape Coast, thus bridging the digital divide and providing new opportunities for innovation.
“With 5G, we can create a more inclusive society where no Ghanaian is left behind,” Awoonor stated. “This is just the beginning of a new digital era for Ghana. Together, we will harness the power of 5G to build a more prosperous and connected nation.”
The introduction of 5G is expected to drastically improve mobile connectivity, enabling faster and more reliable internet services that can support advanced digital applications across healthcare, education, and business. As Ghana steps into this new digital age, the government and NextGen Infraco envision a future where 5G serves as a catalyst for growth, unlocking opportunities for every citizen to participate in a global, interconnected economy.
