Ghana Met Agency Issues Urgent Heavy Rainfall Alert
Ghana Meteorological Agency Warns of Continued Heavy Rainfall and Urges Relocation from Flood-Prone Areas

Ghanaians are being warned by the Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) to prepare for heavy and prolonged rains throughout the country, especially in the southern areas. This declaration follows recent heavy rains that significantly flooded portions of the Greater Accra Region, including Lakeside, Kasoa, Nsawam, and Pantang. Felicity Ahafianyo, Head of the Central Analysis and Forecast Office at GMet, stressed the importance of public awareness as Ghana enters the height of the rainy season in an interview with Channel One TV’s Breakfast Daily on Monday, May 19. I
n order to safeguard their lives and property, she suggested that locals in low-lying and flood-prone areas think about temporarily moving.
“When we released our seasonal weather forecast, we highlighted that this year’s rains were expected to be more intense and frequent,” Ahafianyo stated. “What we’re experiencing now is a confirmation of that projection. Over the weekend, for instance, coastal regions experienced heavy rainfall, and a similar situation occurred in the Volta Region on Friday.”
According to her, these kinds of occurrences are anticipated to persist until the conclusion of the main rainy season, particularly in the southern region of the nation. The persistent weather pattern, which is marked by intense and protracted downpours, presents serious threats, such as flash floods, damage to infrastructure, and possible resident displacement.
Ahafianyo urged the media to provide timely weather information in order to actively support GMet’s objective. Better public access to trustworthy forecasts, she said, might lower risk, increase readiness for weather-related disasters, and assist communities in making educated decisions. The Ghana Meteorological Agency concluded by advising Ghanaians to adopt the appropriate safety measures, pay attention to official warnings, and maintain vigilance throughout this unpredictable rainy season.
