Ghana & Morocco Move Closer to Historic Visa-Free Travel

Ghana and Morocco are making a major diplomatic move by aiming to do away with the need for visas for all types of visitors between their countries. The objectives of this effort are to improve travel between the two nations, foster economic cooperation, and strengthen diplomatic ties. This development was revealed by Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, who said the agreement will shortly be transmitted to the parliaments of both nations for approval. He underlined that this choice is a component of larger initiatives to improve bilateral ties and promote collaboration in important areas including security, tourism, and agribusiness.

Mr. Ablakwa characterized the meeting as “fruitful and assuring” after speaking with Her Excellency Imane Ouaadil, the Moroccan Ambassador to Ghana. He also talked about the worries raised by recent social media posts alleging violence against Africans in Morocco. The Moroccan Ambassador categorically refuted these claims, stating that a widely shared film that allegedly depicted the murder of 700 Africans was really an old recording from a terrible border incident that happened on June 24, 2022. Authorities in Morocco and Spain had already looked into that tragedy, which claimed 23 lives.

The Ghanaian minister also informed the populace that there were no Ghanaian victims in that regrettable incident. In addition to the security talks, he disclosed that Morocco had doubled the amount of scholarships it offers Ghanaian students each year, from 90 to 180, as of this year. Before meeting with the Moroccan ambassador, Mr. Ablakwa met with His Excellency Sergei Berdnikov, the Russian ambassador to Ghana, to discuss potential bilateral collaboration opportunities. Reaffirming Ghana’s commitment to neutrality and global peace, he stated, “Ghana will continue to pursue our longstanding foreign policy of positive neutrality and serve as a credible voice for global peace.”
