Government Abolishes E-Levy and Betting Tax in 2025 Budget to Ease Economic Pressure
In an attempt to ease the financial burden on Ghanaians and promote economic recovery, the Mahama administration has formally abolished the Electronic Transactions Levy (E-Levy) and the 10% betting tax.
Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson stressed that these taxes, which were implemented under the previous government, had worsened the cost of living crisis while failing to produce the expected revenue during the March 11, 2025, presentation of the 2025 Budget Statement and Economic Policy to Parliament.
“The removal of these levies aligns with our broader strategy to reduce economic hardship and rebuild confidence in our financial system,” Dr. Forson stated.
People across the country opposed the 2022 implementation of the E-Levy because they believed it unfairly burdened them financially, especially small business owners and those with modest incomes. In a similar vein, the betting tax encountered strong opposition, particularly from young people who see it as a barrier in light of the dearth of official job openings.
In addition to these tax cuts, Dr. Forson unveiled new targeted tax breaks aimed at helping traders and companies and promoting economic expansion.
“Our goal is to create a tax framework that incentivizes production and business expansion without overburdening individuals and small enterprises,” he added.
In addition, the government has pledged to enhance revenue collecting methods instead of raising taxes. This strategy seeks to raise enough money for national development without adding to the financial burden on the general public.
